I’m a researcher at OpenAI, where I work on health and value alignment. I’m also a faculty member at the University of Calgary.

I joined OpenAI in November 2023 and was an early member of the Health AI team. My public work includes HealthBench, a health evaluation used across the industry; substantial improvements to OpenAI model performance in health; and one of the first studies of clinicians using language models in live patient care.

Before OpenAI:

  • I co-founded and was CTO of Alethea Medical, a digital health platform now used by 50% of family physicians in Alberta.
  • I did a PhD in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, where I was a Rhodes Scholar.
  • As a first-year PhD student, I joined the faculty of the University of Calgary to lead a research group in epidemiology.
    • Our group’s work became a core source of COVID infection and immunity data for the World Health Organization and several government agencies.
    • We also studied how to automate meta-analysis, a direction some team members have continued by starting Otto SR.
    • Along the way, my research group raised nearly $2M USD in funding and published more than 20 papers.
